How far will the Celtic board push to bring in the desired manager the fans crave?

Everyone is aware that the relationship between the Celtic board and the fans is broken, and some might feel beyond repair.

But it could be argued that the powers that be at Parkhead would help themselves massively if they put their money where their mouth is, as they search the footballing world for a new coach.

Pushing the financial boat out, and in an efficient manner. That’s what those in charge haven’t been doing, and it’s a reason why Celtic fans have been protesting.

But as the Hoops look for Brendan Rodgers’ long-term successor, those on the Open Goal panel want the club to ‘break the bank’ for Kieran McKenna.

Celtic told to ‘break the bank’ for Kieran McKenna

Si Ferry and Gordon Dalziel had an interesting discussion around McKenna, the money he is on at Ipswich Town and what it would take to bring him in from the money-crazy footballing world of England.

Dalziel questioned whether the Celtic board would pay the money required to get McKenna to Glasgow.

But Ferry, who was in the ranks at Celtic Park as a youngster, pointed out the ‘£90 million’ that is sitting in the club’s bank.

As Dalziel pointed out, there is a reason why so much money is in the locker, and the abject 2025 summer transfer window proves it, as Ferry urged the champions of Scotland to ‘go and do it.’

Dalziel: “The boy at Ipswich is on £5 million a year, apparently. Is he going to come?

“The problem is, you see what happened with Rangers, right. The days of just picking the phone up and saying, ‘Listen, we are Celtic or Rangers and we want you to be the manager,’ that’s gone.

“I know it’s Ipswich and people will go, ‘Celtic are bigger than Ipswich, and the worldwide support.’ Of course they are.

“But the guy is on £5 million. Then, what does it take to get him out of his contract as well?!”

Ferry: “But Celtic have £90 million in the bank.”

Dalziel: “I know that, but they still have £90 million in the bank. That was the problem in the summer. Are they going to pay £5 million? That’s my problem.”

Ferry: “Why not? If he is your man, and you have £90 million. Why wouldn’t you do it? The manager is the most important person at the club, isn’t he?”

James McFadden: “Brendan wouldn’t have been far off (the money McKenna is on) it.”

Ferry: “They broke the bank for Brendan Rodgers, didn’t they? Why not just go and do it again? If you are Celtic, why not just go and do it? Like you are saying, ‘not paying the £5 million.’ Why not? Go and do it.”
