Former Celtic striker Simon Donnelly believes a fast start for the Hoops in Sunday’s derby could be key for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

The last meeting between the two sides came just under two weeks, which unfortunately ended in an extra-time defeat for Celtic at Hampden Park.

So, this weekend’s fixture provides the Hoops with a quick chance to bounce back from derby defeat over their Glasgow rivals.

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND – FEBRUARY 02: Reo Hatate of Celtic celebrates with his teammates after scoring his team’s second goal during the Cinch Scottish Premiership match between Celtic FC and Rangers FC at on February 02, 2022, in Glasgow, Scotland.

Giving his thoughts on Sky Sports ahead of the game, Donnelly believes that a first start is the key change that Postecoglou will be looking for from his squad.

Donnelly also added that a similar start to the 3-0 derby win would contribute massively to adding another three points.

When asked what would be needed to produce another dominant display at Celtic Park against Rangers, Donnelly said, “I think the start is key. Looking back to the last two games, I know they went to Ibrox and won, but they didn’t start particularly good, and credit to them to turn that around before half-time.

“Again, I know they found themselves in a winning position at Hampden, but I just didn’t feel Celtic were at top gear.

“You go back to the game here (Celtic Park); they really came out the traps, ready to go. They took the game to Rangers and all but killed the game off, were 3-0 up at halftime, and the game was effectively over.

“So, I think Ange will be looking at that and looking for a similar start from the players on Sunday.”

A fast start in Sunday’s game and grabbing an early goal would undoubtedly give Postecoglou and his side the perfect early building block in the game.

We saw that from last weekend’s 2-0 win over Ross County, with Kyogo grabbing an early strike and Celtic going on to dominate.

As Donnelly mentions, Celtic are very much capable of blowing their Glasgow rivals away, as they displayed in the earlier clash at Parkhead this season.

So, it would be a brilliant way to take another step closer to delivering the Scottish Premiership title.

That being said, Ange and his players have shown enough times this season that they are capable of winning games in many different ways.

The most important thing is taking home all three points, sending the Bhoys just one point away from winning the league title.
