Simon Donnelly identifies Celtic duo that should earn starts vs Dundee amid ‘really positive impact’

Celtic are in action against Dundee tonight and Brendan Rodgers will be keen to prolong his side’s unbeaten Scottish Premiership start by claiming another three points.

The Bhoys arrive after a comfortable victory at Motherwell to take their tally to 25 points for the season, sitting above Aberdeen on goal difference.

With Celtic set to face Aberdeen on Saturday in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final, Brendan Rodgers has several intriguing selection dilemmas to make ahead of facing Dundee between factoring in squad rotation and the return of key players.

Encouragingly, Cameron Carter-Vickers is fit again for the Bhoys after a foot problem, while Greg Taylor was also on the bench at Fir Park after a calf injury.

Kick-off is fast approaching tonight at Celtic Park, and Simon Donnelly has offered his verdict on how Rodgers should shape his line-up with another important three points on the line.

Simon Donnelly’s verdict on Celtic starters vs Dundee

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, Donnelly believes Auston Trusty and Luke McCowan have done enough to retain their places against Dundee after helping to control proceedings against Motherwell last weekend.

The former Celtic man also indicated Trusty could partner Carter-Vickers, as he explained: “I would (keep Luke McCowan in the team). I think he’s done well, he’s made a real positive impact coming off the bench, I thought he was really good at the weekend, scores a goal again, I think he’ll keep his place.”

“When asked if Trusty should keep his place: “Again, that’s another one where he shuffled the pack. Scales finished at left-back, it’ll be really interesting to see that. I think tomorrow, I think he might start with Carter-Vickers and Trusty.”

Finishing with his thoughts on Scales, he said: “Whether he starts at left-back, whether he shuffles over there, it’s a good position for the manager.”

Squad rotation likely to be priority for Celtic boss Rodgers

Celtic have a host of high-profile fixtures on the horizon, so it makes sense to rotate the squad when possible to avoid overloading key players.

Aberdeen and RB Leipzig are next up after Dundee, with difficult away clashes at Kilmarnock and Heart of Midlothian dovetailing on each side of the international break.

Two games a week can be a trying set of circumstances to juggle, meaning Rodgers will use every chance available to keep legs in cold storage across a hectic run with much at stake.

Hopefully, fringe players offered the chance to come in and impress can make their presence felt, laying the foundation for another successful campaign under the Irishman.
