Simon Donnelly thinks Jeremie Frimpong will start Betfred Cup Final
Celtic legend Simon Donnelly has named the player he believes will start at right-back for the Hoops against Rangers in Sunday’s Betfred Cup Final.
Neil Lennon has a choice to make for the position. Both Jeremie Frimpong and Moritz Bauer are available for the Hoops. Donnelly, who won the League Cup with Celtic in 1997, wants to see Frimpong start.
“He (Neil Lennon) watches him in training day in and day out so knows what the wee guy can do, and he’s been a revelation” Donnelly said, as reported by the National.
“The boy has the jersey”
“You don’t want to bring players in who are going to be ready in two years’ time. Neil has the courage to blood the youth and someone like Frimpong I believe will play in the final as the boy has the jersey.”
The selection dilemma Neil Lennon has is one of experience against youth, and attack versus defence. Frimpong is only at the start of his footballing career, whilst Bauer is far more experienced.
Lennon has big decision to make
There is also Frimpong’s natural tendency to attack, up against Bauer’s more defensive style of play. It will be up to how Neil Lennon wants to play the game that will decide who starts at right-back at Hampden Park.
As Donnelly says, Frimpong has ‘the jersey’. He has been the player who has been picked as right-back for the Hoops in recent weeks.
However, Lennon may feel that the more experienced Bauer might do better in what could be an important battle against Ryan Kent of Rangers.
It will not be an easy decision for the Hoops boss to make. He will no doubt be weighing up the pros and cons of each player. Who knows, he might not have even decided on who to start yet. Simon Donnelly has had his say, only time will tell if he is correct.
