Celtic’s record in the Champions League has not been great of late. The win over Feyenoord this season at Parkhead ended a long winless run in the tournament.
Over the past two seasons, we have finished bottom of our group with a couple of big defeats against Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid thrown in to boot.
Rangers on the other hand have the unenviable record of being the worst performing team in the Champions League since records began.
When Giovanni van Bronckhorst was in charge, the Ibrox club finished bottom of their group with zero points, two goals scored and 22 goals conceded. Awful.
So when Simon Jordan gave his verdict on both clubs’ record in Europe’s top competition, it’s little wonder he highlighted Celtic as the best-performing team of the two.
Jordan said [talkSPORT], “I mean obviously Ange Postecoglou’s performance in the Champions League for Celtic was not great.
“Rangers got a lot of scorn for their Champions League performances but Celtic were much better.
“They got one credible point against Athletico Madrid.”
Look, I know this is no great win considering both clubs have failed to do anything of note in the competition but when you hear some Ibrox fans twisting the narrative of Celtic in the Champions League, I’ll take an outsider’s view on the game as a wee opportunity to take a dig at them.
Is that petty? Maybe, but it was worth it. However, getting back to serious mode, should Celtic win this league and get automatic entry into the group stages next season, the fans will be hoping that there will be a significant investment in the playing squad.
Because if there is one thing this season has taught us, if you continue to purchase players from the bargain basement section of the transfer market, failure (and sound beatings) will be the only thing that’s guaranteed in the group stages as well as the £60m cheque from UEFA.
