Rangers hiring Russell Martin at least gives Celtic fans clarity on who they need to face heading into the new season.
There were many laughable suggestions that Davide Ancelotti and Luka Modric could be heading to Rangers to take on Celtic.
Those rumours were of course just that. The news that Russell Martin was given the Rangers job has delivered a mixed reaction across the media.
Simon Jordan has had some weird takes on it and prior to Martin’s hiring was slammed for some ‘disrespectful’ comments about Celtic and Rangers.
And now, the talkSPORT man is at it again as he compared Martin’s hiring by Rangers to the time Celtic brought in Ange Postecoglou.

Simon Jordan completely misses the point comparing Celtic hero to new Rangers boss
Celtic fans will remember feeling confused about the hiring of Postecoglou back in 2021 because, in all honesty, not many had heard of him.
And whilst Jordan makes that point, comparing that appointment to Rangers taking on Russell Martin is just daft.
Jordan told talkSPORT, “I was listening to other arguments about who gets to manage these sort of clubs, and I was listening to one particular caller when I was coming in this morning in the Breakfast Show, getting right out of his pram, about the quality of manager going into Rangers, and how embarrassing he thought it was to be and how underwhelmed he was.
“But who was overwhelmed by Ange Postecoglou going into Celtic then? What were the credentials that Ange Postecoglou exhibited from the magnificent clubs that he managed prior to Celtic that gave everybody such a feeling at a big club like Celtic imagined?
“I think there probably was some recrimination and some rejection. When we talk about these big time managers that are expected to go into these big time Scottish clubs, wheel them off the tongue then.
“Because Gerard wasn’t a big time manager, he was a big time football player.”
Why Simon Jordan is completely wrong to compare Ange Postecoglou to Russell Martin
Whilst the crux of Jordan’s point stands, there is a huge difference between Postecoglou and Martin. The ex-Celtic boss was already a proven winner.
Before arriving at Celtic, Postecoglou had already won the following:
- South Melbourne
National Soccer League: 1997–98, 1998–99
Oceania Club Championship: 1999
- Brisbane Roar
A-League: 2010–11, 2011–12
- Yokohama F. Marinos
J1 League: 2019
- Australia U17
OFC U-17 Championship: 2001, 2003, 2005
- Australia U20
OFC U-20 Championship: 2001, 2002, 2005
AFF U-20 Youth Championship: 2006
- Australia
AFC Asian Cup: 2015
The former Celtic boss had also already managed at a World Cup as well. As for Martin, well, he’s spent his whole career in the English lower divisions with no silverware of note won. So the comparison doesn’t really add up.
Celtic knew they were getting a manager with a winning track record. Rangers are not and are taking, what looks like a gamble heading into the new season.
