Callum McGregor has been named as a candidate for the SPFA Player of the Year award alongside Celtic teammates Daizen Maeda, Nicolas Kuhn and Dundee’s Simon Murray.

The Celtic captain has been in scintillating form this season bagging a league and League Cup double and scoring 10 goals in the process.

McGregor has been one of the club’s most consistent players and is deserving of the nomination.

However, it was Dundee striker Simon Murray’s comments about McGregor that raised a few smiles after the striker’s class quip about the Celtic legend’s consistency over his career.

Simon Murray hails Celtic’s Callum McGregor as the ‘ultimate professional’

McGregor has missed just three of Celtic’s 53 fixtures so far this season and has been a major player in Brendan Rodgers’ domestic and European success.

Paying tribute to the Celtic captain, Murray was also buzzing to hear that he won McGregor’s vote for Player of the Year after his form for Dundee this season.

Murray told PLZ Soccer, “I think he must have a parking space at this hotel because he must be here every season.

“So he’s the sort of ultimate professional and what a career he’s had so to get a vote from him is great as well.”

Murray’s vote for Celtic hero who is ‘not a very good player to play against’

Murray has scored 20 goals for Dundee this season which is an incredible record considering the Tayside club are second-bottom in the Scottish Premiership table.

However, the Dundee striker couldn’t hide his admiration for Daizen Maeda who has been on fire for Celtic this season.

Murray continued, “I voted for Maeda. Yeah, it’s just been an incredible season [for him]. And he’s just a very exciting player to watch but not a very good player to play against.”

Maeda has scored 33 goals and created 11 assists this season. The Celtic striker has been superb.

It’s really hard to look past the Japan star for the award but, in truth, McGregor is just as deserving for help motivating and keeping Celtic focused in a season where there seems to be a strange narrative around the club’s success this season.
