Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi reckons that Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster was the difference on a dramatic night in Glasgow.
The Englishman was in top form as he thwarted certain Lazio goals on three occasions in the second-half, with his 95th minute save from Danilo Cataldi the pick of the bunch.
“I don’t think the team deserved to lose,” Inzaghi said, as reported by the Evening Times. “We did play against a very, very good team, but I thought we had lots of chances ourselves, more than enough to win the game. We would have had it not been for some incredible saves.
“I thought we were a really good team tonight. We needed that second goal and if it hadn’t been for the two miracle saves and Immobile’s miss I think we would have got it. We have lost an important game, but we look forward to future games.”
Inzaghi is right to pick out difference maker Forster
Inzaghi’s comments say a lot about Celtic. The Italian reckons his team were “really good” in the East End of Glasgow yet they still came away with nothing. There’s also an argument that Celtic were nowhere near their best – in an attacking sense at least. The likes of Odsonne Edouard, James Forrest and Mohamed Elyounoussi struggled to get into the game so it is a bit of a miracle that we came out on top.
Forster was undoubtedly the difference, much like he has been on European nights in the past. The big Englishman is unstoppable when he’s in that frame of mind and makes saves that few other keeps could.
Cataldi’s dipping volley would have been a stunning blow to Celtic’s Europa League qualification hopes. Thankfully Forster kept us all on a high.
