Singer-songwriter Ellie Dixon has performed a brilliant acoustic cover of Jota’s Celtic song on BBC 5 Live this weekend, ahead of tomorrow’s Scottish League Cup final against Rangers.
The famous “Jota on the wing” chant has become a favourite with Celtic supporters since the Portuguese attacker’s arrival at the club in the summer of 2021.
The tune comes from O-Zone’s massive European hit Dragostea Din Tei. On Saturday morning, Dixon performed it in a way you may have never heard before after host Patrick Kielty took requests for fan chants to be performed live.
If you want to hear it, the segment starts at 1h31m and 58 seconds into this on-demand BBC archive of Saturday morning’s show.
The lyrics, of course, are:
When you score you make the Celtic sing
Jota on the wing, Jota, Jota on the wing
Every time you’re on the ball we know
There’s gonna be a goal
Our superstar from Portugal
Jota has been a sparkling addition to the Celtic squad and the smart money is on him starting tomorrow’s final against the Ibrox side, even though Ange Postecoglou has a lot of different attacking options.
The Portuguese was instrumental in the 4-0 derby win back in September and has been getting back to some nice form recently, scoring twice and assisting twice in his last six league matches.
If both he and Celtic are performing well at Hampden, this song is almost guaranteed to get an airing from the support.
Fingers crossed!
