Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph has claimed that Celtic are happy to wait until January before they add to their centre-back ranks.

Celtic have been linked with several central defensive options over the course of the summer. The Hoops also sealed the signing of Shane Duffy on loan from Brighton last week.

That means that Neil Lennon currently has six options in the position in Duffy, Christopher Jullien, Kris Ajer, Hatem Elhamed, Nir Bitton, and Stephen Welsh respectively

And with that depth in mind, Sky’s Joseph tweeted saying that the Hoops would be “content” to wait four months before adding another option:

Celtic right to put all focus on a left-back this summer

After the addition of Duffy, Celtic do look well-stocked at the back, albeit another addition would certainly come in handy if the option is there.

Joseph, however, has said here that Celtic’s main target now is to bring in another left-back. That most certainly shouldn’t link to the interest in Charlton’s Alfie Doughty (Scottish Sun), with the League One star more suited to playing in an attacking role.

Mitchel Bakker, another who the club has been linked with, has reportedly told PSG that he wishes to stay and fight for his place (Sky Sports). The fact he’s made the bench for the Ligue 1 champions in their last two matches suggests he’ll get his wish.

So there is a real need for Celtic to get out there and find some alternatives. With Boli Bolingoli finally departing for Istanbul Basaksehir on loan, the Hoops only have Greg Taylor available to play in the position.

Whilst Lennon’s recent switch to a 3-5-2 more or less removes the need for a natural left-back, Celtic will need a more defensive-minded option for European games and whenever the manager decides to switch to a back four.

Granted, another centre-back shouldn’t be dismissed. Even if Celtic are willing to wait until January, an eye should be kept open for any potential opportunities to bring quality to our defensive ranks.
