Celtic announced a surprise friendly encounter with Sligo Rovers earlier today that is set to take place during next month’s international break.
The Bhoys will travel across the Irish Sea to play at the Showgrounds on October 9th at 7.30 pm. Away tickets are now on sale to season ticket holders.
Traditionally, the north-west of the Emerald Isle has always retained large support for Celtic. Brother Walfrid was born just a few miles away in Ballymote, so there has been a strong connection to the area since the club’s inception.
Aside from the occasion itself, fringe men and players not involved in international duty may be able to gain valuable first-team minutes. Everton came away with a 3-3 draw at the Showgrounds in pre-season, showing they won’t find it straightforward against the League of Ireland outfit.
Ahead of the clash, Sligo Rovers boss John Russell has talked up the power of Celtic as they prepare for their visit to Ireland next month.
John Russell’s thoughts on facing Celtic
Before Russell’s comments, it is important to note that the match will also commemorate the life of lifelong Sligo Rovers fan Tommie Gorman, who played a key role in facilitating the fixture before his sad passing in June.
Regarding the meeting, Russell expects there will be vast local interest as one of the ‘biggest clubs in the world’ will come to town next month.
He stated [Sligo Rovers FC]: “It’ll be a great day for both clubs given the history Celtic have here in Sligo.
“I’d expect the game to sell out straight away and it’ll be great to see the Showgrounds packed to the rafters. It’ll be a nice test for our boys to see how they get on against one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“The excitement in the area when Everton visited in the summer was amazing and I’d expect a huge amount of attention will be focused on this game also.”
Supporters are urged to snap up their tickets quickly for the fixture as a sell-out crowd is expected. Undoubtedly, there will be a healthy number of Celtic supporters from Ireland joined by those travelling across the water to watch the Bhoys in action.
