Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd certainly caused some controversy with his comments about Leigh Griffiths following Celtic’s 3-1 win over Kilmarnock on Wednesday night.
He suggested that the lack of games that Griffiths has played in not that many league games for the Hoops due to ‘not doing it on the training field’, not taking into account the off-field issues Griffiths had to deal with last season.
“I’m doing him a favour here, because I’ll only include league games…there’s been 135 league games played, Leigh Griffiths has played 34 of them” he said, appearing on Sky Sports after the game.
“That suggests to me that you’re not doing it in the training field. Perform on the pitch, score goals and actually get back to the level that you should be playing at.”
Former Hoops legend not impressed by comments
Boyd’s comments went down very badly on social media. Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton was amongst the many to weigh in, claiming that ‘some of the comments aimed at Leigh Griffiths should have been better thought out”.
Some of the comments aimed at Leigh Griffiths tonight should have been better thought out…

Meanwhile, Celtic fans on social media were livid at Boyd’s comments. One fan called for Sky Sports to sack Boyd over his comments.
These supporters have taken to Twitter over the last 24 hours to share their thoughts on it all:
It’s quite simple @SkySports must sack Kris Boyd for his remarks regarding Leigh Griffiths.

Leigh Griffiths taking the usual abuse from a minority of Killie fans is one thing but the inane and idiotic comments from Kris Boyd make you wonder how such inarticulate and crass people are employed as ‘experts’ by tv companies. pic.twitter.com/EPl1YiMsZx

Kris Boyd needs to apologise tomorrow for his ignorance of Leigh Griffiths recent mental health problems. Shocking comments.
— Colin Dodds (@Doddsie9) January 22, 2020
@SkyFootball the comments from Kris Boyd tonight totally shocking. Leigh Griffiths has suffered from mental health problems & numerous muscle injuries over the past few seasons. For Boyd to question his work ethic and point to a lack of commitment to training is unacceptable.

@ScotlandSky Can you ask Kris Boyd why he has brought up about Leigh Griffiths only playing 35 games over the past few years. We all know the reason why so why does he need to bring this up? Shocking

Kris Boyd's analysis is that Leigh Griffiths appearance levels demonstrate that he was not performing on the training pitch. Where is his analysis of Brendan Rodgers' preferred tactic of playing with one striker, and the performances of someone called Dembele in that role?

Can we have an apology today for wholly inaccurate rant and personal attack by your presenter Kris Boyd on Leigh Griffiths please. This man should never, ever be a pundit in any match let alone a Celtic one. Really poor judgement here by @ScotlandSky not impressed at all.

Absolute disgraceful from ‘pundit’ Kris Boyd. To have a go at Leigh Griffiths mental strength is utterly shameful. How can you justify that? @ScotlandSky @SkySports
Needs removed. Totally unacceptable.

It will be interesting to see what happens next in this situation. Celtic have released many statements in the past, so it will be intriguing to see if they call for an apology after Boyd’s remarks.
Player in a good run of form
As for Griffiths, hopefully the remarks don’t affect his game. He is in a good run of form, and will hopefully ignore what has been said by Boyd, continuing to answer his critics by finding the back of the net.
Griffiths will get plenty of support from the Celtic fans and the club following Boyd’s comments.
Coupled with his two goals in two games, that will hopefully boost his confidence, knowing that the club are behind him.
