Leigh Griffiths marked his first competitive Celtic start in almost eight months with a goal – and a corker at that.

The match against Nomme Kalju had just entered the third minute of first-half stoppage time when the 28-year-old struck a terrific free-kick from 25 yards. It was a goal that the Celtic support had seen numerous times before. But this one seemed to carry more weight.

The stadium erupted when the curling, dipping strike flew into the net. And it wasn’t just Celtic fans at the game that reacted joyously to the goal.

Social media was also decked out in Griffiths praise as supporters flocked to share their emotion.

Griffiths can now get back to playing for Celtic

There was always going to be a massive stir caused during Griffiths big return. His first start, first friendly goal, first competitive appearance and first competitive goal all made the headlines as you would expect.

The forward should now be able to get his head down and get on with improving himself again. He’s still got lots of parts of his game to tighten up but that’s to be expected after a long lay-off.

There were certainly promising signs in his partnership with Odsonne Edouard. The pair looked to have a good relationship without ever really linking up to a proper extent.

They will both improve with more game time together.
