Celtic seem to be on a recalling spree today after the club announced that Stephen Welsh was to return prematurely from his loan spell at Morton.

The defender joins fellow youngster Ewan Henderson back at Lennoxtown after he had his stint at Ross County cut short.

It’s intriguing that the club chose to recall both players on the same day, near the end of January.

And that fact hasn’t been lost on many supporters as they took Twitter to give their reaction. Most of them in their usual tongue in cheek fashion.

Welsh played a lot of football while away from Celtic

While Henderson’s recall seemed pretty obvious, given his lack of playing time at County, Welsh’s is a bit more surprising.

The 20-year-old was a virtual ever present for Morton for the majority of this season so far.

Welsh started 17 consecutive matches for the Ton between August and December.

However, he has played in just one of their three games so far this year and it may have been felt that he wasn’t going to see too much game time between now and the end of the season.

But he’s got to take some real positives from a prolonged period of football at a decent enough level. He may be a bit away from a first senior Celtic appearance, but we’re not exactly blessed for centre-back options at present.
