Whilst Celtic’s men team are training in Dubai this week, the Celtic Women’s team has entered the spotlight, and in a big way.
Celtic’s website made an announcement on Tuesday which was groundbreaking. The Women’s team is set to become professional in 2020.
The majority of the players will be moved onto full-time contracts, and just like their male counterparts the Women’s team is set to head abroad to train, only this time to Spain. Celtic is also set to appoint a new head coach for the team, before the season begins in February. Unsurprisingly, the club were pleased to make the announcement, which some may consider is long overdue.
“Provide the same opportunities”

“Our new professional arrangement aims to provide the same opportunities for women wishing to play the game at all levels as we currently do for men – as a club famously open to all, this is hugely important to us” Celtic’s Head of Business Development Gordon Kaye told the club’s official website.
Celtic are now putting the Women’s team on a par with their male counterparts. This is a big development for which they deserve plenty of credit.
The news was welcomed by some Celtic fans on social media. One fan said that the development was ‘brilliant’, whilst another described it as ‘great news’.
“Great news”

Here are some of the best reactions from social media to the news that Celtic Women are going to become a professional outfit:

It will no doubt take time for the Women’s team to match the best that the game in Scotland has to offer – Glasgow City. They are the benchmark for the women’s game in Scottish football. However, this can only be a step in the right direction by Celtic. Hopefully next season the move pays off, and Celtic Women can go on to have many years of success under this new arrangement.
