Callum McGregor’s form for Celtic has blown hot and cold in recent matches, and yesterday it blew the latter at Easter Road.
McGregor looked composed enough in the final third at Hibs. However, despite being able to knock the ball around confidently, he was lacking a spark when it cames to his final ball. Once again, he didn’t influence the game enough in an attacking sense.

He had two big openings in the second-half that he also should’ve done better with. The second, coming minutes from full-time, saw him rattle a strike straight off Paul Hanlon. Incredibly, despite having two chances in plenty of space in the box, McGregor failed to take advantage.
Some fans, however, believe that he hasn’t been playing well for a while. Reacting to his display yesterday, here’s a look at what sections of the support are saying:
Lennon showing no signs of providing McGregor with a rest
We can all argue that we believe McGregor should be given a rest. He’s played every single game for Celtic this season outside of Nomme Kalju away, and that tells its own story.
However, this seems to be a point that’s getting put across every week. Fans want McGregor rested for a game or two, they feel it’s what he needs to rediscover his old form again. Whether that’s true or not, nobody seriously knows.

But the fact is that Lennon doesn’t appear to be anywhere near giving McGregor a break. He’s one of his first names on the team-sheet, and when you look at our fixtures, that likely won’t change for a while yet.
Celtic face Cluj on Thursday before traveling to Livingston on Sunday. Two extremely tough and must-win games. If we falter in either then it seriously dents our chances in either competition.

Not playing McGregor likely won’t come into Lennon’s thinking. In addition to that, McGregor will likely be away with Steve Clarke’s Scotland for matches against Russia and San Marino respectively next month. That’s yet more traveling for CalMac to deal with.
If fatigue is the issue, Celtic should have enough in the fitness department to work that out for themselves. It could just be a slight dip in form. In any case, no rest looks on the horizon with the games Celtic have coming up.
