Some Celtic fans aren’t too pleased with today’s Glasgow derby announcement after John Beaton was named as the referee for Sunday’s trip to Rangers.
Beaton hasn’t been in charge of a derby since the contest he refereed back in December 2018. He embarrassingly failed to spot a string of incidents involving Alfredo Morelos, who inexplicably stayed on the pitch. This then led to Celtic releasing a statement questioning the standard of officiating in Scotland.
Beaton has refereed five Celtic games since his last derby match of course. The Hoops have won all five, including 4-0 and 3-0 romps at Pittodrie (Soccerbase). Therefore, it’s been more than proven that, if we perform well enough, the referee doesn’t matter.
But the announcement from the SFA today has still annoyed some. Here’s a look at sections of the reaction:
they actually made a John Beaton supporters club banner about him after the game… probably says it all.
Unreal he gets it again after the shambles last time.

John Beaton gets the game on Sunday.
His decisions at a Rangers v Celtic game at Ibrox have already been proven 2b wrong.
Even worse was that the retro bans against Christie & McNulty were not applied to Beaton’s decisions.
First 4 Beaton at Ibrox.
Last 2 McNulty & Christie. pic.twitter.com/GXyaDHip1o

"Celtic have called on referee John Beaton to be allowed to explain his decisions publicly" @CelticFCSLO Without explanation Beaton should be nowhere near this fixture. https://t.co/9haX8sIqed pic.twitter.com/vyrYSXfUs7

Neither Beaton nor Ross should be allowed anywhere near a Celtic fixture.
Their impartiality cannot be guaranteed. https://t.co/6PSGNcGVmw

SFA trolling Celtic by appointing Beaton for the game at Ibrox on Sunday?

Right now, Jim Traynor is preparing the statement calling for protection for referees for the decisions John Beaton will make on Sunday.

John Beaton and Douglas Ross rolled out for the match at the swamp. You really have to laugh at the predictability of the SFA 😒

It wouldn’t have mattered who it was
In truth, is there a referee in Scotland that both side’s supporters would agree on? If it was Bobby Madden, Nick Walsh, or Andrew Dallas – the reaction would likely be the same.
The standard of officiating in Scottish football has been woeful for a long time. That’s why both sets of supporters are always furious when any name gets pulled out of the hat to referee these derby matches.
Beaton was also the referee when Celtic went to Ibrox in 2017 and mauled Rangers 5-1. We were also given a penalty in that encounter too – so it stands to reason that if we’re good enough then it doesn’t really matter who’s in charge.
That’s been our problem in some of the recent derby matches – we simply haven’t been good enough. Granted, Beaton’s performance in his last Glasgow derby game was atrocious. How he missed the Morelos incidents is wild.
Hopefully he manages to open his eyes for this one and has a decent enough game. The last thing we need is to be talking about referees after yet another Rangers vs Celtic game.
What do you make of John Beaton being the man in the middle? Does it make a difference in your view? Is there a referee in Scotland you would rather take to the field? Let us know in the comments below.
