Some Celtic fans have been left delighted by the news that Nir Bitton has committed his long-term future to the club, as announced by CelticFC.net.

The Israeli international’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of the current season, with clubs like English Premier League side Burnley reported to be keen on signing him this January (The Scottish Sun).

However, he has now put pen to paper on a new three-and-a-half-year deal which will see him remain at the club until the summer of 2023.

Bitton has had his ups and downs at Celtic, but over the last 12 months has proven himself to be a very capable utility player who can slot in as a centre-back or his natural position as a defensive central midfielder.

Neil Lennon, who signed him initially, is clearly a big fan and it seems certain he’ll now remain an important and experienced member of the Celtic dressing room.

When things are tight in a match and Bitton is on the bench, he’ll often shortly be seen to shore things up.

It would be easy to overlook his contributions, but our squad can’t be full of guaranteed starters. We do need players who are happy to play a less intense backup role.
