Some Celtic fans have been left impressed by youngster Stephen Welsh after he made his first appearance for the club on Sunday.

Neil Lennon’s team have extended the points lead over Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership to seven points after a 4-1 victory over Hamilton Accies this afternoon.

Although it was far from a perfect performance, our quality eventually shone through in the big moments with Odsonne Edouard netting a double, Christopher Jullien scoring and James Forrest adding a late cherry on the top.

Welsh was handed his debut by Lennon after a loan spell at Greenock Morton earlier this season during which he was primarily played at right-back.

However, he looked comfortable at centre-half today after being recalled by the club last month to provide cover for Christopher Jullien, Kristoffer Ajer and Jozo Simunovic.

On this showing he should be a capable performer at Scottish Premiership level at least, sticking to his tasks well, showing composure on the ball and accuracy with his passing.

One moment in the first half stood out when he cleared the ball in a last-dash chase with a Hamilton attacker.

Given it was his first-ever senior appearance for the Bhoys, the fact he was arguably our stand-out defender is very surprising indeed.

With Jozo Simunovic’s fitness far from reliable, he’ll be hoping he can continue to impress on the training pitch at Lennoxtown and stay in Lennon’s plans.
