Celtic legend Kenny Dalglish has urged critics to take a “balanced view” of what Joe Hart has offered the Bhoys since signing for the club and would have no problem with him staying in place as the number-one goalkeeper in the new season.
Hart made an error in the recent pre-season defeat to Yokohama F.Marinos and there has been a fair amount of debate about his future at the Bhoys – especially in the wake of a transfer link to Croatian international Dominik Livakovic.
For Dalglish, the issue is a little overblown and he dedicated his column in The Sunday Post today to a defence of the former England national team star.
Dalglish thinks Hart critics are queuing up for a pop
He said [23/07 print edition, page 80]: “I totally understand that the modern game is preferable to a keeper who is equally as competent with the ball at his feet than he is with his hands. But the priorities should always be about how good he is at protecting his goal and his organisational skills.
“Joe didn’t cover himself in glory with the opening goal for Yokohama in the 6-4 midweek defeat in Japan. Remember, this is pre-season and it takes all players different amounts of time to get up to speed and really get their eye in. It’s two weeks until the competitive season gets underway for Celtic and this period is all about fitness for players and managers trying new things. Joe also had a makeshift defence in front of him on Wednesday and that is never helpful. But it’s almost as if some people can’t wait to have a pop at him.
“Sure, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but it’s always better to have a balanced view when sharing your thoughts. Overall, Joe has been brilliant in his two years at the club. On the park, he played a huge role as Ange Postecoglou clinched five domestic trophies. Off the park, he has been a positive influence on a day-to-day basis. His leadership qualities are superb.
“It could well be that Brendan is looking for a new goalkeeper and he is entitled to do so. Managers and recruitment departments are always looking to improve on what they have. That’s only natural and correct. Let’s trust the manager’s judgment on that one. But I would not have a problem if Joe was the first-choice keeper for the new season.”
It’s a fair assessment from Dalglish, but one thing he says is undeniable, even though he is clearly a fan of Hart. Celtic will not stop seeking improvements in every position, regardless of who is currently in place or how popular they are.
If Rodgers and Mark Lawwell see the potential to upgrade the goalkeeping spot, then they will do so without hesitation. Hart will be the first to tell you no one’s place is secure in the Celtic squad – because those are the demands that come with representing the club.
Like Dalglish, I have no major concerns about Hart starting the season as the Bhoys’ goalkeeper, but I am also very comfortable with the club seeking out talents such as Livakovic and other experienced, proven shot-stoppers. An interesting six weeks are ahead!
