Some Scotland fans have been praising Celtic-linked Dundee United striker Lawrence Shankland on social media.

Shankland made just his second appearance for Scotland in yesterday’s 6-0 rout of San Marino. As you would maybe expect, the forward himself got on the scoresheet. It was, incredibly, his 16th goal of the season after nabbing 15 in 13 games for United.

The former Aberdeen man has also just come off a stunning spell with Ayr United. Working under Ian McCall, Shankland managed to score a sensational 61 goals in 73 appearances for the Honest Men (Transfermarkt).

It’s an incredible number of goals, and Shankland added to them last night. And, it appears that many Scotland fans (including Celtic and Rangers supporters), were quick to praise him:

Shankland can be pleased with his Scotland displays

Shankland didn’t do anything wrong in both of his first two caps for Scotland over the past week. He was on a hiding to nothing in Russia before coming on and holding the ball up well at times.

But against San Marino, you can’t judge a single thing whatsoever.. His goal could’ve been scored by any of the flops we’ve seen in a Scotland jersey over the last few years. Yes, it was a nice moment for him, but let’s not pretend his goal was more than it was.

Where he did impress was his selflessness around the penalty box. Shankland didn’t look keen on taking all the plaudits for himself. He always seemed to pass when he spotted or even sensed teammates in a better position. That was a real positive trait he showed yesterday.

But again, some of our fellow Scottish supporters were always liable to get a tad carried away. Shankland scored a goal. Against the worst team in world football. It doesn’t make you top quality, and it certainly isn’t enough to make you a Celtic player. And that’s regardless of whether we’ve scouted him or not (Daily Record).

Has he done enough to earn a return to international contention? Why not? After all, his goal-record in the Championship is exceptional, even if it is just the Championship.

Some, however, will continue to get carried away. He looked a decent prospect, but he has much more convincing to do before he comes across as Celtic quality.
