SPFL task Celtic with frantic December

Celtic are set for another frantic December in a month when they could face two more league games than rivals Rangers.

Neil Lennon’s men will face a Europa League clash away to CFR Cluj, and a potential Betfred Cup final, in the last month of the year while they are also currently scheduled to play eight Premiership matches.

One of those matches – away to St. Johnstone – will be postponed if we reach the Hampden showpiece although it is not yet clear when it would be played.

But whatever happens, the team are set to play at least nine competitive matches in just 29 days.

December is going to be another manic month for Celtic

The final six matches of the month look particularly taxing for Lennon and his side. After travelling to Romania for matchday six of our Europa League group we face five league matches in 15 days.

Those games see us host Hibernian and Aberdeen, travel to Hearts and St. Mirren and then finish the month off with the derby clash against Rangers.

Given that the cup final could also be against Steven Gerrard’s side – it looks like a manic month for all involved.

Thankfully now we can look at the squad and see a depth of player that perhaps wasn’t there a year ago. Our recent cup success against Partick Thistle showed that fringe players can come in and freshen things up if required.

But there aren’t going to be any games during December against a team of Thistle’s level. The likes of Hearts and Aberdeen should cause us some problems and first-choice teams may be needed for those matches.

One comfort for Lennon and his players is that they will have the majority of January without playing a match. Celtic will once again travel to Dubai for a mid-season winter camp. Whether they will do so top of the league is another big question.
