St Johnstone's Ali McCann catches the eye of the Celtic support with superb UEL performance
St Johnstone midfielder Ali McCann produced a stunning performance against Galatasaray tonight, and it hasn’t been missed by the Celtic supporters.
McCann has been consistently linked with a move to Parkhead over the last 12 months. Before Ange Postecoglou’s arrival, Celtic scouted the player in the Scottish Cup semi-finals last term [Sunday Post, print edition, 09/05, back page]. This came after a similar scouting mission back in November [The Courier].
The Northern Irish international had a big breakthrough season at McDiarmid Park under Callum Davidson last term. Making 43 appearances in all competitions, McCann showed a maturity and technical prowess to his game [Transfermarkt].
However, tonight, he went up another level with a superb performance in Turkey. Battling in the Europa League third qualifying round, McCann largely controlled the midfield against Aytac Kara and Taylan Antalyali respectively.
McCann wasn’t afraid to go on bursting runs forward, and helped open up the game for Saints. Showing tidy footwork in the middle of the park, his ball retention helped Davidson’s side gain a strong foothold in the match.

In the end, the game finished 1-1 after Sach Boey responded to Jason Kerr’s penalty kick. But McCann came out of the match showing that he could compete on the European stage.

With Celtic still on the lookout for reinforcements, McCann could be a fine long-term investment. He hasn’t looked out of place both at European and international level now.
Whilst there are question marks whether he would walk into the Celtic team, he’s clearly ready for some form of step-up. A project signing in the midfield could be worth splashing out on. Granted, it’s anything but the club’s main priority.
There have certainly appeared to be no advancements from the Hoops regarding a move for McCann. That’s despite the fact he would reportedly only cost around £2m [Scottish Sun]. It’ll be interesting to see if his performance tonight changes anything.
At the very least, there are plenty of Celtic supporters eyeing him up after bossing Galatasaray this evening. Here’s a look at how they reacted to his display on Twitter:
