St Mirren call for immediate termination of Scottish Premiership season despite Rangers action

Scottish Premiership side St Mirren have called for the immediate termination of the 2019/20 in an effort to focus on the survival of clubs and safety of supporters.

Referencing the SPFL EGM called by Rangers to discuss an independent investigation into league conduct around a vote on this issue, the Paisley outfit have reiterated their backing of the SPFL board’s proposals and are firm with their stance on the conclusion of the league season.

They think it needs to happen now.

A statement on their official website this evening read, in part: “It has become increasingly likely that, firstly, no football will played until next season due to lockdown and social distancing and, secondly, that clubs across Scotland need to receive their end of season fee payments as quickly as possible or suffer serious financial problems.

“We appreciate that, in line with SPFL rules, there will now be an EGM on May 12th to discuss the allegations regarding the previous vote on the resolution to end the season.

“However, St Mirren’s view is that the safety of the supporters and the survival of Scottish football clubs must be the priority and therefore it is our opinion that the Premiership season should be terminated immediately. This will allow for end of season payments to be made and for clubs to start to plan as best they can for next season.”

It appears that at the Simple Digital Arena there is a lack of patience with regards to Rangers’ whining around the original vote.

Clubs across Scotland are looking for clarity and while the return of the 2019/20 season would be an amazing turn of events, it just doesn’t look likely.

France and the Netherlands have already called time on their seasons and indeed any football until September 1st. The ongoing public crisis is no less serious here.

St Mirren risk stoking the anger of rival supporters here, specifically those of a Rangers or Hearts persuasion, but they are just as entitled to look out for their own interests as that duo.

Clearly they think an end to the 2019/20 campaign as it stands is what’s best moving forward.
