Stephen McGinn has shared how Aberdeen’s goalkeeping coach was ‘raving’ about Celtic’s rejuvenated star, Liam Scales.
The Republic of Ireland international was loaned out to Aberdeen last season and it seems as though Liam Scales made quite the impression.
Speaking about how the 25-year-old can no longer be dropped from Celtic’s XI, Stephen McGinn added that those at Aberdeen ‘couldn’t speak highly enough’ of the centre-back, as he told Go Radio.
If the recently-capped International was loaned, or even sold, straight back to Aberdeen this summer, then not many would have batted an eyelid, including the player himself.
But with Brendan Rodgers’ return to the Parkhead dugout marred by injuries at the back, it meant that Liam Scales was pushed into the first-team picture.
Even then, many expected the player to move aside when the key players returned, but a different story is starting to build now.
If it was up to former St Mirren star, Stephen McGinn, then he is keeping Liam Scales in the XI, alongside the ever-reliable, Cameron Carter-Vickers – Barry Ferguson recently stated that Carter-Vickers and Hatate would ‘strengthen any team’.

Liam Scales’ rise
“At the minute, the jersey is his to lose,” said McGinn. “A good friend of mine, ex-teammate, he’s a goalkeeping coach at Aberdeen.
“And he couldn’t speak highly enough of Liam Scales. He saw him there last year. On and off the park. He raved about him.
“What I like about Liam Scales is that he is brave, in terms of, over in Feyenoord and the game against Lazio, there were a couple of moments where he has tried passes into midfield – I thought it’s brave because, let’s be honest, everyone had written him off at Celtic.
“I fully expected him to be an Aberdeen player three months ago and they would potentially buy him. Celtic have signed Nawrocki and Lagerbielke to partner Carter-Vickers and he would move on, but he has turned it around – I just hope he keeps at it, everything you hear about him because guys like him you want to do well.”

Extend the lead at the top
It has been an impressive start from the players this season, but you just feel there are a few more gears to hit.
Even from the Treble-winning side under Ange Postecoglou, you can see the improvement in the team this season and it’s pretty good to have the cushion at the top.
But those positive vibes can only continue with three points at Hearts, which would open the gap back up to seven points ahead of a very, very crucial Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.
