Stephen Robinson is close to leaving St Mirren to become Aberdeen’s new manager.

So we decided to take a look at his full record against Celtic, with the Belfast man embarking on his third full-time managers’ job in Scottish football.

With Aberdeen, Robinson is taking a major step up in resources compared to what he has had at his disposal at previous clubs.

Between spells managing Motherwell and St Mirren, he has faced Celtic 31 times, with mixed returns…

Aberdeen-bound Stephen Robinson’s record against Celtic

Robinson has won just two of his 35 games against Celtic between his spells at both clubs.

He has lost 24 of those matches, with five draws making up the total. This is the worst record he has against any opposing club that he has faced more than once.

Both of his two wins against the Hoops have come at St Mirren. The first was at St Mirren Park in 2022 against Ange Postecoglou.

Celtic had gone 38 league games without losing, but a Saints side with just 19% possession scored two early second-half goals to inflict a first league defeat on Postecoglou’s team in 364 days.

The second was more recent in the memory, at Hampden in December, in Wilfried Nancy’s third defeat in three games in charge of his disastrous spell.

Robinson faced Celtic 13 times at Motherwell, winning none. However, it took the Hoops four attempts to beat him at Fir Park.

He faced Brendan Rodgers’ team in both domestic finals in the 2017-18, losing 2-0 on both occasions as Rodgers sealed the Double Treble.

Aside from the cup final, the Hoops’ two other meetings with Robinson this season have been tight 1-0 wins.

Under-19s coach Craig McLeish has been placed in charge of the Saints as Robinson travels to finalise his move to Pittodrie – the sides meet in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup in April.

Celtic’s clashes with Aberdeen this season

Celtic went to Pittodrie in the second matchday of the season; an extraordinary amount has changed since then.

Rodgers’ side won 2-0, thanks to goals from Reo Hatate and Benjamin Nygren. Adam Idah, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston all started the match.

The sides then met at Celtic Park, nine weeks ago. This was one of just two games won by the Hoops under Wilfried Nancy.

Celtic created enough chances to win three or four games, but still needed two late goals from Kieran Tierney and James Forrest to beat Jimmy Thelin’s Aberdeen.

Last week, Celtic won 2-1 at Pittodrie, with Tierney and Nygren getting on the scoresheet again.
