Stephen Welsh admits Celtic teammate has been a ‘nightmare’ to deal with in training

Stephen Welsh has suffered an injury disrupted season so far – but things are now looking up for the Celtic central defender.

Welsh was on a high in the summer after Brendan Rodgers handed him a fresh contract that runs until 2027. Although those good vibes were shattered just a day later when the Scotsman suffered a serious injury to his ankle at Lennoxtown.

That was back in August and Welsh spent a large part of the first-half of the campaign rehabilitating the issue with Celtic’s medical staff.

He made his return in the Champions League win against Feyenoord and put in a strong 75-minute display which will have boosted his confidence big time.

Since then, Welsh has featured against Dundee and Rangers before playing a part in Celtic’s return to domestic action after the winter break in the Scottish Cup win over Buckie Thistle.

He’ll have been right in amongst Celtic’s intense first-team training for a number of weeks now and has been recently joined at Lennoxtown by a new face in Nicolas Kuhn.

The German winger was signed from Rapid Vienna for £3m [Sky Sports] and remains Rodgers’ only signing of the window with just a week until it shuts.

Kuhn is yet to make his Celtic debut but could be in line for an opportunity against Ross County in the league this weekend. And going by what Welsh has been saying about him recently, the 24-year-old is more than ready to make his mark in the famous hoops.

Stephen Welsh has gone as far as saying Nicolas Kuhn is a ‘nightmare’ to train against on a daily basis and noted how impressive his sharpness and speed is.

But he stopped short of crowning Celtic’s £3m man as the fastest in the team. Of course, that title is held by our Japanese flying machine Daizen Maeda.

Welsh told the written media: “He looks really sharp. I’m glad I’ve been on his team in training so far! He looks a nightmare to defend against. Nicolas has come in and brought a good spark to training. Every time he gets on the ball he is looking to beat a man.

“I kind of like that in a player. I like giving the ball to a winger and seeing if he can beat a full back. He’s got a good finish on him as well. I’m really looking forward to seeing him this weekend and the rest of the season.

“We heard he was quick and that is definitely the case. He’s rapid. I’m not sure if he can beat Daizen in a race though. No one is beating Daizen, he’s the fastest man I’ve seen in my life!”
