Celtic defensive prospect Stephen Welsh has taken to Twitter this afternoon to share his delight at making his debut for Neil Lennon’s team today.

Before this morning’s team announcement, you’d be forgiven for not knowing much about Welsh, who has been on the fringes of the first-team for a number of years.

Still just 20, he had spent the first half of the season out on loan at Greenock Morton deployed primarily as a right-back.

Arriving back at the club last month without much fanfare, it looks like he will continue his development as a centre-half, which is where he played regularly rising through the academy and reserve sides.

Now he’ll be a familiar name amongst supporters after impressing in a 4-1 win against Hamilton Accies in the Scottish Premiership.

On a day that Celtic went seven points clear over Rangers at the top of the table, it’s great to see Lennon blood another youngster into his first-team plans.

Welsh said on the social media site: “Unforgettable day making my debut, and a great win as well.”

Deployed in a back-three alongside Christopher Jullien and Kristoffer Ajer, the academy graduate was a composed and comfortable pick, even making a crucial challenge in the first half after chasing down a Hamilton attacker who could have been through on goal.

With his social media message shared by Celtic, hundreds of people have gotten in touch to congratulate the youngster, with thousands more ‘liking’ his Tweet.

Hopefully with support like this he can go on to make more appearances before the end of the season…
