Stephen Welsh’s new Celtic contract is undoubtedly a superb piece of business for the football club.
Welsh today confirmed a new four-year deal with the Hoops in what’s s smart move from the Hoops after a breakthrough season.
The Scotland youth international has managed to make 16 appearances for the Bhoys this season and has been a constant alongside Kristoffer Ajer in 2021 [Transfermarkt].
The player himself described the new deal as the “perfect” scenario for him when speaking to the Celtic website. And in truth, it’s the best scenario for everyone connected with the club too.
For Celtic have managed to sign up one of Scotland’s hottest young centre-back prospects. A player who has bossed it in big domestic games, Glasgow Derby matches, and against European opposition.
Stephen Welsh’s new Celtic contract is undoubtedly deserved
Before this current campaign, Welsh had only played for Celtic once. That came after a handful of games for Morton on a loan spell during the 2019/20 season. His meteoric rise since then has been incredible, but it hasn’t been undeserved either.
Indeed, Welsh has looked the part at every level he’s played at. Thrown into the deep end, he’s shown a confident range of passing as well as aerial dominance. He can also boast impressive displays against some of the better strikers in Scotland. The likes of Alfredo Morelos, Kemar Roofe, Florian Kamberi, and Christian Doidge have all struggled to get the better of him.

It’s easy to forget he’s only 21. For a centre-back, that’s incredibly young and bodes well for how much potential he still has left in him.
Welsh looks likely to get thrown in once again against Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday. It’ll be another major test of his capabilities, but it’s not one he’s failed to show he’s ready for. The smart money is on him strolling through it as he did the last derby back in March.
And it’s clear the Celtic supporters are delighted with the news too. Here’s a look at how they’ve reacted:
