Steve Clarke urged by Scotland fans to bring Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths in from the cold

Scotland fans have been taking to social media in recent days urging Steve Clarke to bring Celtic star Leigh Griffiths in from the international wilderness.

Griffiths hasn’t been selected for the national team for over two years as fitness, and off the field, problems have impacted the forward’s career.

However, he showed excellent form for Celtic at the start of 2020 and is again in contention for a starting spot in Neil Lennon’s team.

He recently came off the bench against St Johnstone to score an absolutely crucial last-minute goal for the Bhoys.

Scotland play Slovakia tonight and the Czech Republic on Wednesday, before taking on Serbia in a huge European Championships play-off next month.

Clarke’s side progressed against Israel mid-week on penalties, but it wasn’t a pretty performance.

Scotland’s attacking options are minimal right now, and a Griffiths return would no doubt add a bit of much-needed quality.

However, the Tartan Army boss has indicated that the Celtic striker needs to be playing regularly for his club before becoming part of his plans.

Clarke told The Scottish Sun: “If they want to be involved with Scotland, and the squad selection next month, then they have to be on the pitch. They have to be fit and have to be firing. They have to put themselves right to the front of my thoughts.

“If there are boys outside the squad who have not been selected this time then they might have half an eye on the future. But if they want to be involved then they have to play week-in, week-out for their club.”
