Callum McGregor opted to give his full focus to Celtic earlier this month after retiring from international duty with Scotland.
The 31-year-old made 63 appearances for the national side and featured at two major tournaments. However, he has since informed Steve Clarke of his wish to be no longer available for selection for his country.
Ultimately, the decision makes sense for Celtic. McGregor endured injury problems last season that threatened to end his season prematurely, so it is only right he does what feels right for his body while still in the prime of his career.
Despite being a constant feature for the Bhoys over the last decade, the Glasgow-born midfielder isn’t getting any younger: protecting his influence is vital while the club can still make the most of his talent and leadership.
Now, Steve Clarke has delivered his verdict on McGregor’s decision to call time on his Scotland career.
Steve Clarke’s verdict on Callum McGregor’s Scotland call
Per The Daily Record, Clarke has admitted his slight surprise at McGregor’s decision to retire from Scotland duty.
Nevertheless, he understood his position and took the time to thank the Celtic captain for his weighty contribution within the set-up.
He stated: “First of all, thanks to Callum for his input over the years, he’s been a key player. We’re disappointed to lose him, we’re disappointed, for us, that he’s retired, but I respect his decision. No one else is indicating retirement; no one else has spoken about it.

“It’s not for me to phone them and ask them are they going to retire, that probably comes across the wrong way. Everybody’s determined to go and be more successful.”
If early indications are anything to go off, McGregor is already enjoying his new lease of life, knowing he will get some time to chill out during the international break.
The Hoops captain has scored two long-range stunners against Hibernian and St Mirren in consecutive league matches this season, making his contribution on the goal front felt early in the campaign.
Hopefully, McGregor can continue his fine form as Celtic look to replace Matt O’Riley’s influence from within. It would be nice in the window’s final days if they could source one or two quality reinforcements to raise the bar in midfield, that is what we all hope will happen.
