Steve Lomas thinks Zander Clark is better than anything at Celtic

Former West Ham midfielder and St Johnstone boss Steve Lomas believes Zander Clark is better than anything at Celtic at the moment.

Clark has been shining for St Johnstone over the last 12 months in particular. He was a key role in their run to two domestic cup successes last season. Not to mention he’s shown up well in Europe against the likes of LASK and Galatasaray respectively.

The Scottish talent has been with St Johnstone since 2008 after coming through their youth ranks. Celtic fans have been able to watch first-hand the maturity he’s managed to develop in his game as he begins to gain recognition outside of Perth.

And Lomas believes Celtic could do a lot worse than go for the Saints star, whose contract expires in 2022.

As quoted by Football Scotland, Lomas said: “You look at Celtic at the minute. It’s been good for St Johnstone that they’ve been able to keep Zander but if he keeps performing as he has been I think it’s only a matter of time.

“There’s no doubt Zander is better than what’s at Celtic, in my opinion, from what I’ve saw, keeping an eye on it. I’ve kept an eye on his career and what he’s been doing and I think if he keeps going and doing what he’s done for the past 16-18 months, he’s been right up there as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premiership.

“He’s got to keep his head down and if he keeps performing the way he has been it’s only a matter of time until he’s involved. He’s coming into his prime years, from 29-33/34, the next five years. That’s why I’m surprised there’s maybe not been someone taking a sniff on him.”

Zander Clark a fine goalkeeper, but Steve Lomas has gotten one thing wrong

Lomas may have been right last season. When Scott Bain and Vasilis Barkas were struggling to impress, you would do well to find evidence of either being better than the St Johnstone man.

But Celtic have since signed experienced England international Joe Hart. As decent a goalkeeper as Clark is, he doesn’t even compare to Hart’s ability. Celtic have one of if not the best goalkeeper in Scotland, and you can bet he’s only going to get better the more he gets used to life in Scotland.

That’s not to say Clark isn’t a potential option for Celtic in the future. The Hoops still have to re-decorate their goalkeeping department in the long-run. Even as back-ups, there are major question marks over Bain and Barkas.

Hart has shown himself up to be reliable when it comes to having no injury problems. But it only takes one error or one piece of misfortune for him to be on the sidelines for a spell. The prospect of Bain or Barkas jumping in over him would be a major concern.

So when Celtic look at potential shot-stopping options in January or the summer, they could do worse than take a look at Clark. But better than anything Celtic currently have? Sorry Steve, but that’s now an outdated verdict.
