Steven Thompson is never one to go too overboard with praise for Celtic, but his latest comments come across as bitter.
The former Rangers and St Mirren striker is a regular part of the Sportscene panel. He joins Michael Stewart and Jonathan Sutherland on a weekly basis to discuss and analyse how each game went.

However, Thompson couldn’t bring himself to just admit Celtic were multiple class levels above Aberdeen. Whilst he may have given us praise during the segment on Sportscene post-match, he made a dangerous comment regarding Aberdeen “laying down” to Celtic.
He stated on Sportscene (27/10/2019) that Aberdeen were “toothless” and that fans had a right to be frustrated because their team “just lay down to Celtic”.
Ridiculous pro-Rangers rhetoric from Thompson here
You can just see that kind of comment coming straight out of Nacho Novo’s bar. It’s a ridiculous comment to make that has pro-Rangers connotations to go with it.
Make no mistake, this is a thought process that’s mightily popular with the Ibrox support. They love to think that Aberdeen don’t try against Celtic. Despite the fact Dons supporters generally can’t stand us, and the fact that their players have the motivation of playing the best team in Scotland – they still apparently “lay down” to us on a regular basis.

It’s easier for rival fans to say that than to just admit that Celtic are too good for them. For example, the reason Rangers failed to beat Aberdeen on multiple occasions last season was because they simply weren’t as good as Celtic. If they were, they wouldn’t have struggled.
If Rangers had gone to Pittodrie and been 4-0 up at half-time, we wouldn’t have heard the end of it. The media would be singing from the rooftops, and the Ibrox fanbase would go on about it for weeks. And they would be quite right.

But it has to be the same the other way around. Comments like Thompson’s don’t do Celtic the justice they deserve after a performance like that.
You knew this kind of venom would come out after we stormed to a routine success at Aberdeen. Celtic aren’t allowed to win big without being told the opposition were poor. That’s just the way it is. But going by Thompson’s thinking and that of the Rangers support, Aberdeen also lay down to Rangers at Ibrox, right?
