Stiliyan Petrov has admitted that he is “surprised” to see his ex-boss Martin O’Neill remaining at Celtic.
Petrov, who played under O’Neill at both Celtic and Aston Villa, nevertheless has no doubt over the 74-year-old’s ability to keep the fairytale going.
Robbie Keane was in a head-to-head race with O’Neill for the role, but in the eyes of Petrov, there was no competition between the two.
The Bulgarian ex-midfielder reacted to the news shortly after it broke.

Petrov told Sky Sports: “I’m actually surprised that they only offered him a one-year deal. It should’ve been a two-year deal.
“With the job he’s done there last season, with the management skills…

“I’m actually surprised. I thought that Celtic would offer Martin a new, different role, more relaxed — but it seems like they love this way.
“His skills and his ability to win major honours… he has obviously justified his appointment, and I hope and wish him all the best for next season.
“But I’m surprised, actually, that they haven’t offered him a different role, more relaxed, but Martin O’Neill is Martin O’Neill.
“He’ll be about 102 by the time that deal flies! No, listen, one year deal, they just want to stabilise the club.
“They know that he’s done remarkably well, winning the championship being behind all season. The last couple of months, he has shown that he’s been such a great character.
“But there is a question: can he win again next year? What’s going to happen?”
On Robbie Keane, Petrov continued: “Listen, I’ve followed Robbie’s managerial career, and he’s done really well.
“But when you compare Robbie Keane and Martin O’Neill, and you have the opportunity, and Martin O’Neill agreed to continue with his team, with his knowledge, to be the Celtic manager…
“There’s no question about it. He was always gonna be the first choice. As long as he agrees to it, and as long as he shows the same energy and determination to work for this great club.”
