Former Celtic hero Stiliyan Petrov has praised captain Scott Brown for taking his game to ‘a new level’ recently, speaking to The Sunday Post.

Petrov himself was once an influential midfield dynamo for the Hoops and although he chose to continue his career in the English Premier League, continues to have a special place in the hearts and minds of Celtic supporters.

He also knows a thing or two about leadership, having served as club captain of Aston Villa for a number of years.

The way the Bulgarian talks about Brown is brilliant, clearly in awe of what he’s currently achieving at Celtic Park.

As quoted by The Sunday Post, he said: “He is just an amazing skipper, isn’t he?

“I look at the way he plays the game, and can see a new level of maturity and direction. He controls the tempo of the game and doesn’t always need to do it at 100mph, as might have been the case four, five or six years ago.

“The players are also responding positively to that leadership. Having Scott there must be great for Neil. The manager knows he can trust him and let him do his own thing and guide the players. It’s invaluable to have that trust and respect.”

Brown’s incredible consistency

I think one of the reasons Brown gets so criticised when he turns in a poor performance is because he is so consistent otherwise. When he has a stinker, it sticks out like a sore thumb.

The level he sets in the Celtic team is one every single teammate has to meet to be considered as a regular – not just in terms of performance but in work rate, commitment, discipline and desire to win.

At one stage in his Hoops career it looked far from certain he would go on to become a club legend, but that’s undoubtedly what he is. He’s a living, playing legend and long may it continue.
