Lewis Morgan’s omission from the final game of Sunderland’s Championship campaign was a head-scratcher.

Fortunately, Black Cats manager Jack Ross has moved to confirm the Celtic youngster is fine.

Sunderland lost out 2-1 at Southend United last weekend. It means that they finish the season in fifth place – a relatively disappointing final position for them.

But Morgan’s omission from the team last weekend certainly didn’t help. Speaking to the Chronicle, however, Ross has said that he’ll be back in training this week despite sitting out.

“Lewis suffered concussion in training otherwise he would have been involved today, but he will be back training in the next couple of days once protocol is followed.”

Morgan has a huge chance to make Neil Lennon take notice

The League One playoffs are hardly the highest quality games you’ll see, but they are pressurising. Sunderland are considerably the biggest club in the division. They’ll have massive pressure on their shoulders to jump back into the Championship next season.

Therefore, Morgan has the chance to show Lennon that he can deal with big-game pressures. Sunderland will face Portsmouth in the semi-final first and foremost. The first leg takes place on Saturday at the Stadium of Light, with the second leg five days later at Pompy.

Morgan will likely be involved given he’s at a high point of his loan spell. He’s been impressing supporters with his display in recent weeks, after a tricky start to his time on Wearside.

The Black Cats are currently on a run of just one win in seven games, however. Confidence isn’t exactly flowing in the North East, and that’s what would make a few standout performances even more impressive.

Promotion to the Championship could also give Celtic something to think about next season. Could they send the former St Mirren man back to develop further? Or could he finally start making his mark at Parkhead?

The rule should be run over him this summer. Fortunately, he won’t be coming back with any nasty knocks as it stands. His injury from Saturday appears to be minimal, and he certainly doesn’t need any setbacks before he tries to impress the Hoops coaches next season.
