Chris Sutton has hit out at Brendan Rodgers following his decision to leave Celtic for Leicester City. The former Hoops boss quit the club with only three months of the season remaining. And it’s the timing of the move that has irked Sutton.
“The speed of the move tells you it’s surely been in the planning for a while, and he’s left the club in a mess” he told the Daily Record.
“Cast a big shadow”
“It’s very poor and has cast a big shadow over the good work he’s done at Parkhead. It’ll take time for fans to forgive him. Some never will.”
Rodgers’ departure has left Celtic in a state of turmoil as the season enters a crucial stage. Neil Lennon has stepped in as interim manager until the end of the season. There will be calls for Lennon to be made manager on a permanent basis should he lead the Hoops to a league and cup double. That is for the summer though.
From hero to zero
As for Rodgers, Sutton is correct about his reputation in the eyes of the fans. He has gone from hero to zero in the space of less than 24 hours.
As Sutton says, the timing is the real issue. If he had left at the end of the season, he would have been given a fond farewell. There’s no chance of that at the moment, the wounds are too raw. Rodgers, in time, will eventually be seen as one of the best managers in Celtic’s history. But it may take a while for fans to forgive him, if they ever do.
