Tam McManus believes Celtic have January edge over Rangers

Scottish football pundit Tam McManus believes that Celtic have a key advantage over Rangers in the January transfer window.

Both ourselves and Steven Gerrard’s side remain neck-and-neck on points in this season’s Premiership. Despite Celtic’s scintillating form over the last couple of months, only goal-difference separates the sides.

It’s fair to say that both teams are itching to try and put some points between each other. Rangers now have a run of difficult games that could hand Celtic an advantage before our meeting on December 29th at Parkhead.

However, even if things are still level heading into the January window, BBC and PLZSoccer pundit McManus believes it’s Neil Lennon’s side who have the edge. Speaking to PLZ Soccer, McManus gave his thoughts on both clubs’ spending power.

“Celtic are in a great financial position in terms of spending money if they have to in January.

“Celtic have obviously got a squad just now who need one or two to come in and strengthen the starting XI, but they have got good money and good power behind the scenes to go and strengthen. Obviously a lot more than Rangers have got at the minute, so I think that’s a big advantage for Celtic.”

Celtic don’t need much work in January

This is a fair assessment from McManus. Given our Champions League participation in recent years combined with some heavy player sales, there will be money there if necessary.

Yet the key question is just where do Celtic truly need to strengthen? Lennon has already hinted that he could bring in another striker in January (BBC). Yet when everyone is fit, we have three main strikers to choose from. If Lewis Morgan continues his form over the festive period, he could be another candidate.

Outside of that, is there one area of the starting XI that really needs strengthening? Our backline is fine as it is, whilst nobody will be displacing Scott Brown or Callum McGregor anytime soon.

James Forrest and Ryan Christie are huge fan-favourites, whilst Mohamed Elyounoussi and Mikey Johnston have us more than covered at left-mid.

You could argue that the squad options potentially need strengthening. However, we have names such as Jozo Simunovic, Nir Bitton, Scott Sinclair, Lewis Morgan, and Leigh Griffiths sitting on our bench when fit. We have quality rippling through the squad.

It doesn’t take a financial expert to know that Celtic should have more to spend in January than Rangers. However, it’s whether we actually need to use it that’s debatable.
