Tam McManus has written off Vakoun Issouf Bayo already
Former Hibernian striker Tam McManus has written off recent Celtic recruit Vakoun Issouf Bayo saying he doesn’t fancy him.
Ivorian forward Bayo, who joined for a reported £2million from Dunajska Streda in January, has been a bit part player under Neil Lennon so far this season. The 22-year-old has registered just one competitive goal this campaign but he has looked a handful whenever he has played.
However McManus, who was speaking on Wednesday’s PLZ Soccer show, reckons that the forward isn’t the answer.
“Edouard is a player Celtic cannot afford to lose any time soon.
“He’s the most important player at Parkhead just now and if they lost him, you’ve got Bayo to come in, I wouldn’t fancy him.
“Leigh Griffiths is still having issues. It’s very important that Celtic keep hold of him if they want to win the league this season.”
McManus does touch on pertinent Bayo point
It’s easy to see both sides of the Bayo debate. On one hand, writing the Ivorian off so early into his Celtic career seems a little ill informed. Despite being at the club since January he’s only actually started two matches. On both occasions – against Hearts and Partick Thistle – he was a real handful for the opposition defence and very unfortunate not to have netted more than his solitary strike.
He hasn’t been helped in recent weeks by Neil Lennon who has thrown him into some tough scenarios. Expecting a 22-year-old to save the day against Hibernian and Livingston seems a little bit of a tough ask – especially when his fellow first-teamers struggled badly on both occasions.
However, McManus does make a pertinent point with regards to our lack of backup for Edouard. We really don’t have a reliable player to turn to if the Frenchman was to be absent from selection.
With the team being so dependent on our talisman, heading into such a busy time of the season, that is certainly a worry.
