“That’s what you want”; Scott Brown gives strong advice to the next Celtic captain

Scott Brown has been speaking to Celtic fans today in a media event arranged by the club.

The captain took questions from various Celtic podcasts and websites for half an hour via a Zoom call this afternoon.

As ever on 67 Hail Hail, we try not to dwell on the past but think of the future, so we asked Brown what his advice would be for the next Celtic captain, whoever that turns out to be.

Current contenders include long-serving players such as Callum McGregor and James Forrest, as well as other leaders such as Christopher Jullien or even an outsider appointed by the incoming Hoops boss.

Regardless of who takes the armband, Brown had some pretty universal guidance.

He told 67 Hail Hail: “I think you’ve got to deal with the lows very well. You’ve always got to believe in your teammates.

“The one good thing about Celtic is there’s a game every three or four days so it’s that bounce-back mentality. As long as everyone is together, and you believe in each other, you’ve got that willingness to run through walls for each other. You’ve got to be touch tight together as a team.

“We won nine titles in a row and it was incredible because we worked so hard together, individually and collectively. You’ve got to try and bring everyone together.

“We’ve got people in that dressing room that want to be a huge part of this club and push the club forward. That’s what you want. You want people to stay at this club for a long time and understand what a great club it is.

“I had opportunities to leave before but I never wanted to leave because of the fans, the stadium and to be around the teammates and managers I’ve had and who I’ve learned from. It’s been exceptional.”

Brown will go down in history as one of the club’s greatest ever captains. He’s the most successful to take the armband since the legendary Billy McNeill.

It’s doubtful another captain will surpass his trophy haul for generations, if at all.

Whoever takes on the armband next will do very well indeed to learn from the great man and his reign as the top dog in Scottish football.

Hopefully Celtic can find the unity that Brown is calling for.

We’ll have more on the future of the Celtic captaincy with Scott Brown, and former captain Jackie McNamara, on our YouTube channel later today so don’t miss that!

In other news, Dominic McKay is set for talks with Celtic fan groups this afternoon.
