Celtic boss Neil Lennon has disclosed that one of the reasons that the Hoops were so keen to sign Christopher Jullien was because of his goalscoring ability.

The centre-back, who joined the Hoops in a £7 million deal from Toulouse in the summer, scored for the Hoops in the 3-1 win over Kilmarnock on Wednesday night.

That took his tally of goals for the season to five goals.

Following the win over Kilmarnock, Neil Lennon paid tribute to his defender’s goalscoring abilities.

“He can be a real asset”

“Chris Jullien scored a marvellous header, I love them goals, it’s absolutely fantastic and one of the reasons why we brought him in, because he can be a real asset at set plays.”

Jullien’s goalscoring abilities have already led to some memorable moments for the Hoops this season. He scored the winning goal at Celtic Park against Lazio and the only goal of the Betfred Cup Final.

Those have been two of Celtic’s biggest wins of the season so far, and the Hoops have Jullien to thank for getting the team over the line.

Clever management by the Hoops boss

It is clever management by Neil Lennon to look for an aspect in a player’s game that perhaps few people have identified. As a defender, Jullien wouldn’t ordinarily be expected to impact the game at the other end.

So far, the Hoops manager’s instincts have proven to be correct, as Jullien is well on his way to a good scoring record by the end of his first season with the Hoops.

He should look to take his tally to 10 goals between now and the end of the season. With the number of set pieces the Hoops get, he has a real chance of reaching that target.
