The Celtic board assurance Fergal Harkin wants before being announced as director of football

Fergal Harkin has been one of the names most consistently linked to the newly created Celtic director of football role.

He’s been in the mix for months now, but Celtic haven’t yet been in a position to announce his appointment.

So what’s the hold-up?

Well, a report in The Glasgow Times may provide the answer.

Journalist Graeme McGarry reports that Harkin is indeed closing in on the role, but that the Man City man wants an assurance from the Celtic board he will have the final say on transfers at the club.

That’s obviously a very important and crucial detail. If granted that ability, Harkin will be one of the most powerful people at Celtic Park from the off.

Obviously, any Harkin transfer decisions are going to heavily rely on the opinion of scouts, coaching staff and whoever the new manager is, but if he has the ability to sign off on who comes in and out of the club, that’s a huge deal.

Celtic are hitting the reset button this summer, but whether those primary decision-makers at the club are willing to concede that amount of control over our destiny remains to be seen.

Perhaps a good compromise would be giving Harkin a seat on the board, allowing him direct input on matters at the club, without giving him sole responsibility on transfers.

Whatever Celtic eventually announce is going to bring us into a brave new world regardless, it seems.

In other news, Olivier Ntcham is likely to return to Celtic this summer.
