The Celtic support receive a timely reminder from Alvaro Morata

Many Celtic supporters may have been trembling a little as Alvaro Morata struck Spain’s opener against Scotland on Thursday night.

It was a night of disappointment for the Tartan Army as Callum McGregor and co fell to a 2-0 defeat in Seville.

McGregor’s side didn’t play badly and took the lead in glorious circumstances only for VAR to rule the goal out. Soon after, a Spanish attacker scored with a quality header. Sounds pretty familiar, eh?

But while it was Spain’s Morata rather than Lazio’s Pedro doing the damage on this occasion, it was another tough one for McGregor to take. Scotland do, however, still have 15 points on the board and still look good for Euro 2024 qualification.

Morata is a world-class forward, as he showed when netting his 34th senior goal for his country. Sadly for us, he plays his club football for Atletico Madrid.

Thursday’s strike was his fifth goal in as many games for club and country. The fact that the other four all came for Atletico — braces against Real Madrid and Feyenoord — suggests that he’s a player we’ll do well to keep quiet.

As one of my pals put it to me in a group chat on Thursday night: “He’s going to be murder against us.”

Nevertheless, that’s the standard we are aiming to take on and beat. We also have a prolific forward who can do damage if given service.

We already can’t wait for that Atletico clash.
