The condition that would make it acceptable for Celtic to sign nobody in January

When it comes to who Celtic will sign in January, we’ll all have our disagreements.

Perhaps you felt it should’ve been Mark McKenzie who made the journey from Philadelphia Union. Or maybe you believed a Filip Benkovic return would’ve done the trick. Or a move for Preston centre-back Ben Davies.

But here’s a thought. What if we don’t actually sign anyone? And what if that was actually deemed an acceptable course of action from the Celtic board?

Hear me out.

Yes, Neil Lennon has already outlined that he wants a new centre-back [Scottish Sun]. He could do with one after Christopher Jullien picked up a nasty injury against Dundee United last month.

But if Celtic make the decision to relieve him of his duties at the end of the season, then why give him another player? Another player that a potential new manager may not fancy?

Look, nobody wants Celtic to just give up this season. However, if Lennon gets the rest of the campaign, then surely that’s pretty much what we’re doing? That’s an admission that a new manager couldn’t do anything to turn the season around.

Will Celtic sign anyone in January? Would you give Lennon the chance?

I personally don’t believe that to be the case. I think any change should be done immediately in order to turn the atmosphere around at Parkhead before next season. It would also be nice for any new boss to win the Scottish Cup if it goes ahead.

But that doesn’t look like being the case. The Daily Record reported this morning that there have been no discussions between Lennon and the Hoops board regarding his future in recent days.

Yet the prospect of him staying beyond the end of the campaign is unfathomable. If big changes are indeed coming to the club in the summer, why add another token defender? It would make no sense to go adding to a squad when a new manager may want to dismiss that very same investment.

We have to be wise about how we approach the final week of the window. The club should’ve acted before now. However, the three draws against Hibernian and Livingston (x2) looks to have been the knockout blow for Lennon. At this point, it’s too late to add to the squad.

Perhaps if a new manager had been appointed then the January window could’ve been seen as a great opportunity. A chance to start the rebuild early and start to get a settled side in place for the summer.

However, if Lennon stays until the end of the season, January additions really make little sense at this point. This, for me, is the only scenario in which it would be acceptable to sign nobody.

In other news, a Lennoxtown graduate’s contract is coming to an end; Celtic must make their move now.
