The damning Celtic stat which Brendan Rodgers is hoping to overturn against Red Star Belgrade

Celtic fans are desperate to see their side improve in Europe.

Domestically, the team are as dominant as they have been for generations, with trophies and trebles galore.

But in terms of Europe, things have been less straightforward. A disastrous Champions League qualifying defeat to Kairat Almaty was the latest continental result to reflect poorly on where Celtic are at presently, compared to the past.

Not so long ago, the Hoops came within inches of taking Bayern Munich to extra time in a Champions League knockout tie. But moments like that have been too few and far between for many Hoops fans.

One stat demonstrates a big reason for that – one which Rodgers will be hoping to change tonight.

Damning stat about Celtic’s European away record

Celtic’s away record in Europe has been unimpressive at the best of times.

The Hoops infamously failed to win an away match in the Champions League group stage until 2012, failing in six campaigns.

And in recent seasons, history has began to repeat itself.

The Hoops have failed to win in any of their last 14 European matches away from home.

This run stems across matches in the Europa League, Conference League and Champions League.

It also includes humbling defeats by six-goal margins to Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid and August’s humbling upset defeat to Kairat.

A more positive note for Brendan Rodgers and Celtic

Despite a winless run away from home, the side’s overall record hasn’t been too bad over their last ten matches.

Across all European encounters, they have only lost two in their last ten. Six of these have been draws, but most teams can’t complain about avoiding defeat on the road in Europe.

There is clearly something to build on there. Rodgers has been clear that Europe is a main focus of his second spell in Glasgow.

Will the winless run come to an end tonight? We will see.
