Former Celtic striker Tony Watt is in the midst of a superb renaissance with Motherwell and it reached new heights last night.

The former Hoops prodigy is still widely adored by the Celtic support after his famous winner against Barcelona back in 2012. And whilst it didn’t lead to a productive long-term Celtic career, the Hoops-supporting striker remains a popular figure amongst the fans.

Since leaving Parkhead in 2014, Watt had struggled to find a home. Spells with Standard Liege, Charlton, Cardiff City, Blackburn, and Hearts failed to bear fruit. The same goes for other foreign ventures with OH Leuven and CSKA Sofia.

Including his time at Motherwell, Watt has spent time at 10 clubs over the last 7 years. A lack of consistency in his footballing career has led to him failing to settle and make his mark at any particular club since leaving Celtic.

But that’s all changed with Motherwell. Watt signed for the Steelmen back in early 2020. Since then, his game has developed with confidence returning. So much so that the 27-year-old earned a new contract last year as he finally finds some stability.

However, his form has really taken a massive boost since the summer. Watt is currently top of the Scottish Premiership goalscorer list with 8 efforts to his name in 16 games [BBC]. This came after he netted a winner against Dundee United in last night’s huge 1-0 success for the North Lanarkshire side.

Tony Watt making a name for himself once again 7 years after Celtic departure

Watt’s form has been electric this term, with 9 goals scored in all competitions. So much so that his form has recently had him be touted for a potential Scotland call-up [Football Scotland]. As of yet, that hasn’t come to pass, but Watt is finally getting positive press once again.

His time at Motherwell is already the longest he’s spent at any club since leaving Celtic. You can see how happy he is there in how he goes about his business too. There’s a confidence to his game that’s coming through stability.

At 27, Watt can still have a fine career. He’s nowhere near reaching his peak as of yet, and could even make one or two step-ups should he feel the move is right for him.

But he’s clearly finding happiness at Fir Park these days. Given what he’s experienced in his career, you imagine he’ll value that particularly fondly. Considering his goal return this season, you feel as though he’s in the best position he could possibly be in.

It’ll be intriguing to see how long he can keep this up for. Kyogo is only 1 goal behind him and has played 5 games less. It’s only a matter of time before the Japanese international likely races away as the nation’s top scorer.

But Watt’s turnaround has been brilliant to see. He still absolutely loves the club and is always one of the first on social media to congratulate certain Celtic players on their performances. It’s great to see him back loving life again.
