Sunday was nothing other than a massive disappointment for Celtic and the club’s supporters. I don’t think there’s any escaping that.
Even if you saw signs of progress in the derby performance in terms of matching Rangers, as I did, you can’t deny the team let itself down at critical moments. It’s not a game we should have lost.
Still, what’s been quite heartening for me in the aftermath is the recognition that Ange Postecoglou is taking us in the right direction. I’ve seen very little overreaction to the result and, given that I regularly write on this website, Twitter and appear on YouTube, I see a lot of feedback on Celtic.
Postecoglou is going to have time to get Celtic firing, I have full confidence in that. His bond with the Hoops support remains strong.
Part of that is because of the man he is. And that was never better displayed by an interview he did with Sky Sports ahead of yesterday’s derby.
If you haven’t seen this, it’s a must-watch.
The broadcaster aired the near six-minute clip prior to the match, also posting it on their social media accounts.
In it, he talks about his experiences as a young immigrant on a boat to Australia from Greece. He talks about the sacrifices his parents made to give him a better life. His late father comes across as a loving but demanding figure who has helped forge Postecoglou into the man he is.
He ties this all back to Celtic and the club living up to its traditions of representing Irish immigrants to Scotland and helping support disadvantaged communities across Glasgow and beyond.
Honestly, unless you have a heart of stone, you might find it hard not to get emotional listening to him speak. As someone with a late father myself, I was certainly holding back a few tears!
Postecoglou needs to get big decisions at Celtic right. He needs to learn from mistakes. We need to continue to see Celtic progress. None of that is untrue.
However, personality and character alone will resonate enough with supporters to give him time to do that, in my opinion. He’s a fantastic leader for Celtic and I hope will all my heart he is a huge success here.
In other news, Jota set for Monday medical at Celtic.
