The latest on Matt O’Riley’s future after stellar Celtic form

Matt O’Riley is continuing discussions with Celtic about signing a new long-term contract after a stellar start to the 2023/24 season.

O’Riley has been one of the Bhoys’ top performers since Brendan Rodgers returned to the club, scoring four goals in his first eight appearances – as well as contributing to efforts across the midfield.

It was reported last month that contract negotiations were underway and Sky Sports have followed that up with confirmation that these talks are continuing.

That’s despite significant interest in the player towards the end of the summer transfer window. Leeds United had a bid rejected and it’s thought there will be further interest in January.

O’Riley could also be heading for a breakthrough in his career by receiving a call-up to the senior Danish national team.

The Celtic midfielder qualifies to play for England, Denmark and Norway – but it’s the Danes who have stolen a march on others by including him in U21 internationals over the last 18 months.

Now, Sky Sports reports that he is being seriously considered for a call-up for next month’s internationals, as Denmark search for a creative midfield option to charge up their ambitions.

If things remain on the current course, the 22-year-old has a shot of making this the best season as a professional.

Hopefully Celtic can capitalise and tie him down for a few more years yet. It feels like we’re still scratching the surface of what he could do in green and white.
