Jeremie Frimpong has gone on to bigger and better since his Celtic days.

Arriving as a youngster from Manchester City in 2019 on a four-year deal, Brendan Rodgers helped to craft the young Dutchman into one of the best wing-backs in the world.

His performances grabbed the attention of Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen, who signed Frimpong in January 2021, where he has improved year-on-year, playing a vital role in their near-perfect 23/24 campaign.

It’s no surprise to hear that some of the biggest clubs in the world want his services this summer and even though he’s no longer at Celtic Park, a special clause could see the Hoops benefit from any deal.

Celtic inserted sell-on fee in Jeremie Frimpong’s contract

When a player with the talent of Frimpong moves on, you want to feel the benefit of it in the long-term.

Thankfully, Celtic knew what was coming with the 24-year-old and planned ahead by inserting a special sell-on fee into his contract.

Back in November 2024, the Daily Mail revealed that the Bhoys negotiated a deal that would see them earn 30 per cent of any profit Leverkusen made on a transfer involving Frimpong.

The defender allegedly has a release clause of £34.7m in his contract – an increase of the reported £11m fee they paid to prize him away from the Bhoys.

It means that if his release clause is activated, Celtic could expect to recoup the same amount they received in the initial deal.

Liverpool are said to be one of the clubs monitoring Frimpong as they brace themselves for the likely departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold this summer and he has already been given the seal of approval from former Celtic teammate, Christopher Jullien.

“Yeah, I think that he has the quality for it, though,” the Frenchman told The Celtic Way.

“He has shown it at the highest level against big opponents with Leverkusen, and I think he would be up for the challenge. He’s a really good player.”
