The man who’s likely to captain Celtic against Rangers with McGregor and Bitton out

Celtic have personnel problems for Rangers’ visit on Wednesday, that much we know already.

It’s probably the only real concern we have heading into such a massive Glasgow derby. The momentum is with us as we continue our perfect start to 2022 whilst Rangers are making mistakes and dropping points all over the place. We look primed for a big result, but we’re missing some big players.

2 of those players would’ve been in line to be captain for us too. Callum McGregor, of course, has been our on-field general all season. However, his facial injury looks set to keep him sidelined for the derby. Any chance of him making a recovery looks fanciful at best and dangerous at worst.

With Callum out, the burden would’ve likely fallen on the shoulders of Nir Bitton. The big Israeli has already captained the Hoops 4 times this season on the rare occasions that Callum hasn’t featured [Transfermarkt].

In theory, then, that leaves Ange Postecoglou with a huge decision to make. But for those eagle-eyed among us, you may be able to piece together who will be next in line to take the armband for Wednesday’s game against Rangers.

When McGregor has been subbed off this season with Bitton not on the pitch, the armband has instead been given to experienced goalkeeper Joe Hart. A veteran leader, the former England number 1 has been a commanding and vocal presence all season.

Joe Hart the right personality to lead Celtic against Rangers

The Celtic players have consistently talked up how important Hart has been behind the scenes this term [Scottish Sun]. He’s looking like one of the signings of the season. And with that in mind, he looks all but certain to lead the team out against our Ibrox foes this week.

Many aren’t overly-keen on the prospect of having a goalkeeper as a captain. However, it can also be a real advantage for the team. Considering the goalkeepers isn’t always involved close-up in the movements of the game, this gives him a chance to analyse the goings-on and look at where individuals can improve.

The likes of Gianluigi Buffon, Hugo Lloris, and Oliver Khan were all captains of major clubs over the years. It can be an extremely effective tool. And considering how intelligent a footballing mind Hart has on him, this would be a wise decision.

Hart does have some experience in the past of captaining top-class teams too. He’s led out Manchester City, West Ham United, and England over the years. He won’t be daunted by the occasion.

Not to mention his vocal personality and sheer aura makes him the most viable candidate for the role with Callum and Nir out. Looking through our potential starting XI for Wednesday, you wouldn’t have it on anyone else.

Hopefully, it all proves to be a successful night for Joe and the football club as a whole.
